Since returning to the spotlight with her latest album, 30, Adele has been having plenty of fun with fashion. Though the singer has always been well dressed, the looks she’s worn lately have been sultry, colorful, and imbued with a sense of fun. Case in point: Her set at the Brit Awards this afternoon, where she wore an electric custom gown by Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli that captured her current mood. Unlike anything Adele has worn previously, the dress lit up the stage during her rousing performance.

For Piccioli, the look embodies the allure of its wearer. “Designing couture confers the gown with a very special aura, making the whole experience unique,” he tells Vogue. “On one hand, the creative process remains the same; on the other, the final output has something magical: the dress resonates with the artist’s personality.” Silk long sleeve dress Though the designer and his team received the request from stylist Jamie Mizrahi during the middle of summer leave, they immediately set to work. “No sooner had Adele called, [and] we were working on her dress,” says Piccioli. “Such enthusiasm made possible what, in the beginning, seemed just crazy.”
Their passion for the project meant every aspect of the piece, from its color to its texture, was chosen to complement Adele’s performance. “Green is her color,” says Piccioli. “Not only is it perfect with her features, but it has a strength and a positive vibe that impeccably celebrates her voice.
